Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he liked playing various card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting really aggressive in these card games while playing his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little while and relocated to New York City to participate in some formidable chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were rough as he would play countless hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He earned some extra money by being an runner for the poker players. He judged he could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus more on poker.

The actual advancement in his abilities began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would regularly challenge each other. Howard had access into some of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, he would hone his logical thinking techniques. Howard used these strategy ideas in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a superb student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the strongest female players the poker world has ever seen. Howard relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the next 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
