Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha hi lo starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of betting follows where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering follows at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants often get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same concept in just about every poker game.

The lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

While it seems difficult at the start, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to get the basic subtleties of the game simply enough. Since you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting array of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have numerous players battling for the high hand, and many shooting for the low. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
