Omaha Hi-Low: Basic Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but favored poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering follows at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of entrants get baffled. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must use precisely three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same approach in just about every poker game.
The low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
While it seems complicated at first, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the base subtleties of the game easily enough. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better provides an overwhelming assortment of betting choices and seeing that you have several individuals shooting for the high, along with several shooting for the low. If you prefer a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is worth your time to compete in Omaha hi low.
