Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he loved participating in various card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming very competitive in these card games while playing his father. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a bit and relocated to New York to compete in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were difficult as he would play many hours and lose a majority of the time. He made some additional money by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he possibly could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more sleep and focus even more on poker.

The definite improvement in his skills began when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would regularly compete against each other. He was able to access a number of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, Howard Lederer would tweak his cunning thinking skills. Howard used these strategy concepts in the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.

He also assisted his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie was a superb student of poker as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie to move out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the greatest women players the poker arena today. He moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the next decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to compete in more tournaments.
